ASUS K570ZD-ES55 graphics and shutdown issues.

Recently, I bought an ASUS K570ZD-ES55 from NewEgg. (You can see the specs at the link.)

I'm running Slackware64-Current on it; 14.2 didn't recognize everything. Even -current doesn't see everything; lspci doesn't show the AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card as such, but it does show the NVIDIA GeForce GTX-1050.

Well, it would show the NVIDIA card if I didn't blacklist nouveau.

If I don't blacklist nouveau, starting X takes much longer; that's not that big of a deal. What is a big deal is that I cannot shut down the machine when both cards are available. Shutdown hangs indefinitely.

I'd like to be able to use the Radeon card normally but have the NVIDIA available for heavy duty 3D applications. I know that I haven't provided enough information above, so please ask for what would be needed to help me to get this system to work as it is supposed to do so.

TIA.

There have been updates to the kernel-firmware for AMD graphics, but the 4.19 included in -current may not be enough to take advantage of those. I'm running the 5.3.1 kernel (loading the config from 4.19.x and then running make olddefconfig to answer all new options with the kernel recommended defaults) with the latest kernel-firmware package I built myself using the script (although, it should match what's in -current right now) on 14.2 and it seemed to fix most of my graphic instability with my AMD RX570. Now if I could just get OpenGL working on it properly on 14.2, but that's quite the mix of upgraded packages that is needed for it to happen and I haven't straightened it all up yet.

Just to be clear, the AMD graphics card works just fine. I suspect that if I blacklisted it and used the GTX 1050 instead, things would work just fine as well.

Having them both available doesn't work very well; the AMD card ends up running X, but shutdown never succeeds in that case.

No, that is not the case.

vgaswitcheroo reports that both cards are discrete, but I haven't had much luck with the 4.19.x kernels.

ASUS K570ZD-ES55 graphics and shutdown issues.

Technical info is not readily available, but I found a review of the laptop from about a year ago, which makes the hint that the graphics work in a similar fashion to the Optimus chipset. If that is the case, then the Nvidia GPU won't work independently.

FWIW, here's a link to the linux-hardware.org info for this specific laptop: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=ecca7bced0
