asus 1005pe netbook + slackware 13 on sdhc card
 

i've managed to get slackware installed on an 8G sdhc card. it'll be slow but this is mainly for testing and now has become a good puzzle for me. the systems boots off the sdhc card but the boot hangs because /sbin/init isn't available. i can correct this by mounting /dev/sdb1 on /mnt then exiting the shell to let the boot continue. the system comes right up and works just fine as far as i can tell.

my guess is there is some missing module or possible delay needed for the mount to happen. i have added several modules (sdhci, mmc, pcmcia, udev, fuse, ext4, atl1c, ath9k?) and set a delay of 50 in lilo.conf. however none of this has helped resolve the /sbin/init issue.

could ext4 be the issue? i'm not sure what slackware is using by default but i would guess ext3. i can reinstall (will take a couple of hours since i'm doing a full install modulo kdei) but would like some ideas from folks before i go to that trouble.

as i said this is mainly a curiosity on why it isn't booting without intervention. i'm planning on taking one of the 10 or so partitions on the hd for slackware after the testing ends. it is nifty to show to some friends that slackware (full install) can run off an sdhc card. and yes, i know that memory cards will wear out. this is for fun not permanent use.

Slackware 13 does use ext4 by default.
Ext4 also requires the crc16, jbd2 and mbcache modules.
These modules are all compiled into the huge kernel.
If you are using the generic kernel then you will also need an initrd.gz containing these modules as well as any other modules required to support your hardware.
