oh well i assumed that xmms is the linux equivalent of Winamp. I play .wmv files all the time in winamp on my windows box. I tried playing the wmv file in xine and this is what i got:
The Stream
'/home/user/downloads/10.wmv' use an unsupported codec:
Video codec: MS WMV 8 (Win32) (WMV) Start Playback anyway?
when i click on yes, it plays the audio only but i also get a popup that says: a problem occured while loading a library or a decoder: wmvdmod.dll
Some distributions don't include the needed codecs for that, to prevent possible licensing issues. You can get them (and the info on installing them) here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html
are those plugins only for mplayer or for xmms too? Would i need to install the mplayer plugin for xmms to get those plugins to work?
They're not plugins, they are codecs and they will work with mplayer, xine, VLC, and also with xmms with the mplayer plugin for xmms. So, yes you need to install the mplayer plugin for xmms as well. (Why not just use mplayer or xine or VLC ? ... whatever it's your choice)
