I'm not even sure how I would make a better tittle to this thread, but I'm just wondering... RedHat, Conectiva and Debian has apt-get/synaptic, Gentoo has sync emerge. Is there any program like that for Slackware? I do not even know how this sort of programs/package managers are called, so that's why I did such awful thread tittle and could not find anything useful into the search button. Mods feel free to change the tittle if you wish.
Well, the simplest way would be to look at the ChangeLog in slackware-current and download the new pacakges There is a highly configurable tool called swaret (http://swaret.xbone.be/) that automatically updates your system for you. Dropline is also a great tool for upgrading the GNOME desktop environment.
Swaret works well... updated a lot of huge apps, most significant would be KDE, thru swaret and it works very well.
The only problem with Slack is that there's not that many sites which update packages regularly... I know there are some on the net, but they're quite hard to find.
Slackware comes with a text-based menu driven package installer called pkgtool. Just download the binaries of the package you want to install in tar.gz format and pkgtool does it without a hitch.
Thanks a lot to everybody. Wow, that was pretty new for me... pkgtool then, would install .tgz as rpm does like? Or am I out of spot again...
I know Slack does rpm's, but it's poitless . So far I was downloading all from source and compiling. Nice to know I've another option too.
Thanks again guys, I'm searching on google about your ideas guys. I'm just in love with Slack, finally a good non-rpm distro
