maybe its just me but there are some stuffs i am loyal back to them...so selling is not an option...and my ipod is one item in this list...i curse myself for falling for the apple ads then but hey it still plays so well so many years down the line...not to mention and suffered an umpteen falls and still brick solid and so yeh i still keep holding on to it...

vmware and win xp sp2 without network would be the last safe bet...hate exposing myself in the windows environment with the network on....

i think i stated this before but the apple engineers purposefully make that file difficult to hack so that users would have to pay for music and videos thru it00ns rather than drag-and-drop-ing files manually.

i am curious, how big is that file. can you put it in a file hosting site and provide us a link ?

There should be plenty of options to sync music to your device without resorting to virtual machines. I just don't believe you're going to be able to use the command line to copy music over to the device and have it update the internal database. I believe you're going to need to use a GUI program to copy the music onto the device. I mentioned a few of them in my previous message (some might require additional libraries, like libimobiledevice or libgpod).

I already suggested using Banshee on the first page of this thread a while back, since that uses libimobiledevice - a software written entirely for the purpose of communicating with the Apple devices.

I don't know why my suggestion was ignored. Maybe OP likes horrible command line solutions and tampering for weeks without a solution more? ;-)

There also is an alternative firmware for iPods available here:

http://www.rockbox.org/

That should be able to use USB drive mode, like most of all music players on the market.
