apm suspend not timing out

I run a Slackware mp3 server using gnump3d on an old pc that uses apm. Last week it was timing out automatically after 15 minutes. Now it doesn't. The apm process is running. Why isn't apm going into suspend mode now after 15 minutes? I'm using a desktop pc, Slackware 10.2, and kernel
