APM poweroff
 

I have a chaintech motherboard and i compiled APM support and "use apm BIOS calls to power off" into the kernel and the Linux powers off the computer automatically after the halt script finishes (last message is "power off" and the computer powers off by itself, a feature of all the newer motherboards i beleive.
Now i have a new computer, a ASUS A7V266-a motherboard and i compiled both APM and "use apm BIOS calls to power off" into the kernwl as before, but this time the computer doesnt power off, but when halt script is done, the system waith with "power off", last message of halt script for me to manually power it off, by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Now this is very annoying as you might expect, So is there a way to force the kernel (apmd) to automatically power off this motherboard as well? what should i do to make it working like the chaintech motherboard?

Disable SMP Support in kernel and recompile it.

SMP support is disabled, kapm and apmd are running but the computer still doesnt power off. What else could cause this problem, maybe some BIOS settings are not letting Linux kernel pass the instruction to power off to the motherboard?

How it works for me..
 

KG7-RAID. I compiled only apm and put it in kernel, instead of as a module. I skipped the 'BIOS power off' thing (too lazy to go look what it's called). When I say 'halt', the sytem powers off. Don't know if that's exactly what you did, but if you have apm support as module, try moving it into the kernel.

Choose

(*)Advanced Power Management BIOS Support
(*) Ignore USER SUSPEND
(*)Enable PM at boot time

Then recompile kernel and try again...

Did that, still no luck. The halt script stops with "power off" but the computer doesnt power off automatically... Are there any other things i should enable?

What happens if you do "modprobe apm"?

I got it to work after fiddling around with APM kernel support. I disabled ACPI and left only APM support, and disabled "Use APM bios calls to power off" and now it works, with only APM support without any additioanal things.
