Apache-Tomcat: A Little Confused About Installing and Running as a User

I'm evaluating (or trying to) DSpace which requires Apache-Tomcat to run as user dspace:
Note that DSpace will need to run as the same user as Tomcat, so you might want to install and run Tomcat as a user called 'dspace'. Set the environment variable TOMCAT_USER appropriately.
Uh, huh? My brain ain't working today. Does that mean edit the SlackBuild to replace all instances of 'tomcat' to 'dspace' or that it can be aliased with the environment variable or something else entirely? What if I actually need Tomcat for something else -- can two instances of Tomcat be installed, one named 'dspace' and the other named 'tomcat'?

Any clues?

Why not just run dspace as the default tomcat user? There is nothing special about the name in use, so whether it's tomcat or dspace, it ought to work.

You can have two instances of Tomcat running but you won't be able to use the default Slackware packages for one of them.
