Apache Server Configuration in Slackware 12.1

Dear All,
I am trying to configure my Apache webserver in my Slackware 12.1 box. I am using Server Side Includes in my webpages that are in .php. I just can't get the webserver started. To my dismay I find that my webserver can't even host basic webpages in .html that do not have any Server Side Includes.

I have been going through almost all links related to this and can't figure out where I am wrond. I have FC8 as a multi-OS on the same laptop and have configured an Apache webserver with Server Side Includes for .html. But I don't have PHP installed on the FC8 machine so I thought I'll host it from the Slackware 12.1 installation.

Below are my httpd.conf and my mod_php.conf. Would greatly appreciate someone pointing out what is wrong in these 2 files. Or if I need to check if I missed out something elsewhere. The message on my /var/log/httpd is:

Quote:
[Sat Oct 18 22:16:07 2008] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ...
[Sat Oct 18 22:16:07 2008] [notice] Digest: done
[Sat Oct 18 22:16:08 2008] [notice] Apache/2.2.8 (Unix) DAV/2 PHP/5.2.5 configured -- resuming normal operations

My httpd.conf file:

Quote:
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr//var/log/httpd/foo_log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/usr"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 10.8.2.30:80
Listen 80

Please put [CODE] tags around your file listings and not [QUOTE].

Well this works for me - never tried it before but I followed this link and this one to get it all working.

The end result is I can have php included in php and ssi's in .shtml and .html. In a nutshell here's what I did:

Added XBitHack on to the main server bit of httpd.conf.

Added Options +Includes to my <Directory "/srv/httpd/htdocs"> in httpd.conf.

Uncommented these two "AddType text/html .shtml, AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml" lines in the <IfModule mime_module> stanza.

Then created an .shtml and a .html file in my htdocs/ with :

Code:
<!--#echo var="DATE_LOCAL" -->
as a test.

Created a index.php in my htdocs/ with
Code:
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
and a file mytry.php with :
Code:
<?php include "index.php";
 ?>
I then chmod +x'd the .html file. All files worked as expected.

I'm anything but an expert in all this bit have an interest - if I can do it anyone can !

Thanks for the response. But still not working .

Added XBitHack On

Added :
Code:
    AddType text/html .php .html .shtml
    AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .php .html .shtml
Added:

Code:
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes
I installed Slackware 12.1 full version.
I have hosted the webpages on my department webserver with no problems using php include. But i can't read the config files of the apache server on the dept because the administrator has disabled read permission.

Any idea if there some other problem? Do I need to reinstall apache, php?

Thanks in advance.

Just to be sure here - can you host ordinary .html files OK or is apache not working at all ? I took it that SSI's weren't working with .php but standard .html were OK - is that the case ?

In any case I'm definitely not the best person to ask about this as my experience with apache is very limited. As I said - this is the first time I've tried playing with SSI's. Hopefully someone more qualified than me will chime in.

I found the solution on this page:
http://dan.drydog.com/apache2php.html

Basically, I commented out the line:
Code:
AddType application/x-httpd-php php
and in its place added
Code:
AddHandler php5-script php
Now it works fine with php includes. Thanks for the responses.

Just for fun, I think it may be still possible to read httpd.conf using php (if httpd.conf is at least readable by apache user...)

Not wishing to be a killjoy or anything but I'm not sure this is a good idea albeit an interesting one ...

Yes, I guess you are right, administrator has surelly good reason to disable read permissions (I still wonder why but anyway...)
