Apache 1.3.33 will not start

I am trying to get apache started on my slackware 10 box and when I try to start the service, I recieve
"/usr/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started"
and nothing else. If it gave me something more descriptive, i might be able to figure out where to look to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The first place to start looking are the log files
The error_log file in your apache's log directory is most likely to contain meaningful error messages, but /var/log/messages is always a possibility.

Daemons don't usually output their messages output to the console, because they're not normally started from a console.
