Anyone wanna fill me in!?

I'm considering switching over to Slack. I use Debian based now, but I'm wondering the following:

1) How easy is it to install software? I know if when compiling something and it get's a error, I'm stuck.

2) What is and how well does the Slack package management work?

3) Are there alot of dependences problems?

1) easy way: installpkg software.tgz
harder way:
Code:

while (not_compiled)
{
    compile;
    if (error) {
        get error_message;resolve error
    }
}

look into checkinstall!!!

2) runs very well: just do installpkg, removepkg or upgradepkg and you can manage your software. Then there's swaret (good for mass upgrading) , and slackpkg (good for finding the needed package, when resolving an error)

3) depends on the software. Lately I wanted to install the gDesklets and went through hell and it still doesn't work. Other software however compiles and installs like a charm. With slackpackages however there are (nearly with non-official packages and absolutely with official "Patrick"-packages ;) ) no dependancy problems that cannot be resolved. :)

Where does Swaret find/get it's packages from? Same sorta deal as Debian just from Slack sites?

Swaret does use the slack mirrors for the "list" of newer packages. I use swaret and find that it is pretty solid.

I have used Slack for years, and no matter how far I stray, I find myself going back to Slackware.

Gotta give props where due...Debian is a rock solid distro with good package management. Slack is an awesome distro and the package management hasn't held me back thus far. Not as polished as Debian's apt get, but effective and reliable just the same.

slack isnt that hard also the package management is very basic it is very good and there are lots of packages for most software out there also there are some apt-get like progs for slack avaible like slapt or swaret ...
