anybody try AVFS?

So I installed rox and wanted to be able to browse tarballs and things of the sort. I tried to install avfs (the stable version 0.5 something or other). With the stock kernel it went through all of the steps fine (configure, make, make install) but it didn't work. I tried the troubleshooting and the only thing that seems wrong is that avfs-stat doesn't output anything. At any rate, I also tried to compile it using the kernel that I compiled myself. It choked on make install - a whole bunch of error messages that look like it's complaining about file system stuff and other things (microkernel code, etc). I went through all of the troubleshooting steps, I have coda inserted as a module, redir, /overlay directory, you name it. I would like to get this working with my kernel - looks like a sweet program. I also looked at using the midnight commander vfs stuff but it didn't make any sense on how to use it - all it said pretty much was don't do this.

Any hints?
