Anybody tried X11R6 6.8.0 from LinuxPackages ?

Hi,

I've just seen that Jim posted the newest X11 packages for Slackware 10 at http://www.linuxpackages.net

Anybody tried them ? If so, it was a success or a failure ? What steps did you follow ?

I've heard that xorg.conf needs another keyboard driver (just need to change the name). But what's the name of this driver ?

Thanks in advance.

PD: I want dropshadows... or a Mac...

gbonvehi 09-11-2004 08:50 PM

I've just seen it, and it gives details on how to install it and a link to the place where it talks about the new keyboard driver. It seems it work, be sure to read the description which says what to do.

When it works for those who tries; please post some screen shot. If you don't have webspace you can email it to me at carboncopy.pub(at)gmail.com.no.spam. Ofcourse that is a spoof up email to aviod spam. You will know what to do.

Ok I'll take some screenshots and give a link in this post (I'm not at home right now, in a few hours i guess it'll be ready).

gbonvehi 09-12-2004 02:37 AM

Well, i've 3 screenshots, if you want i can take more tomorrow i'm very tired now. I couldn't get any app supporting transparency, but shadow and fade effects works great, they are really nice.
Downside, I tried it with gnome too but it didn't like it, it seems gnome is not yer prepared for it, I don't have kde so i couldn't test with it (the two major leagues). However it worked great on fvwm2 and i'm very happy with it.
It isn't too slow i only had to put RenderAccel 1 on my xorg.conf to make it run fast, so be warned about this, because before i put that it was reaaaall slow :)

Oops, almost forget the screenshots: http://knix.no-ip.info/xcompmgr/

Oops2, X11r68 works without any trouble (i haven't noticed any speed difference regarding the other version). Of course, xcomporg slows it's down a little bit, but not too much, and it's turned off by default so on a fresh install you won't notice any difference.

About the install procedure, just upgradepkg oldpkg%newpkg :)
Besides that all i did was to backup my current xorg.conf file, and do a new one using X -configure (it works very well the program except for detecting resolutions and it doesn't set a DefaultDepth so I had 8bits as default :/).

(I didn't try yet, but saw others responces in forums)

From what I heared about the versions ppl compiled themselves:
- Font anti-aliasing no work (judging by gbonvehi's screeny 1 - no longer a problem.)
- With composite feature on resizing windows was a performance hit.
- With composite feature on, some video players had problems with overlays. (no datail on the mode used - DRI, FB or what.)

Tried myself

Hi,

I've tried 6.8.0 myself. Here's a screenshot: http://www.geocities.com/reflash8435/shutDownGui.html

My desktop looks really good using composite extensions BUT it is as SLOW as beautiful. I'm using an nvidia Gforce 440 mx with nvidia drivers.

Another problem I've found is that when a window maximizes it covers Gnome's panel (which is really annoying).

Bye

SnOp

PD: Any solution for this problems will be welcome.

Thank you! I've been failing at compiling x11 for days - bizarre errors came out and I got sick of it - I've installed the packages - it looks gorgeous but WOW is it slow :)

I've only got an old 1.3Ghz, it just can't cope, but it makes for pretty screenies :)

Hi,

I'm really excited now! Dropshadows and window fades work REALLY fast now. No noticeable performance hit! (I believe that it works even faster when moving/resizing).

I've just added this to my xorg.conf (section "Device"):

Option "RenderAccel" "On"

Now there's no need for a Mac! ;)

Bye

PD: The only thing that annoyes me is that gnome panel isn't refreshed properly and that it gets covered when maximizin a window. I don't know if it's a bug in gnome panel or xorg but it did not happen using xorg 6.7.0

Edit:

I've found out that using dropshadows makes my system crash doing certain operations. Looking at nvidia forums seems that I'm not alone...

Also, initialazing xcompmgr using -c and -f flags creates a really beautiful fade effect on windows and menus (although it should happen faster for better usability).

Anyway, the future is really promising specially when gnome/kde begin using the new features for both eye candy and usability.

Yesterday I've compiled Xorg from source(had to recompile freetype2 to) and installed it with checkinstall somehow resulting in messed up permissions in my ~/. Deleting/creating files from the top level of my ~/ resulted in "Permission denied" but i had the rights to do it  Well anyway chwoned -R the whole dir and that took care of it.
Having Xcomposite extensions enabbled makes the X server crash or lockup once in a while(i have to ssh from an ibook to kill xcompmgr). And with drop shadows enabled some apps startup with some part of them "eaten up by a shadow" :D (using cvs XFCE, GF4 mx440 and latest nvidia drivers).
So today grabbed the packages(what do I had to loose). The lockups are still here.
Well I guess they dont call it *HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL* for nothing ;)

The package at linuxpackages is missing transset, the program to set transparencies. I found a page http://www.kde.me.uk/index.php?page=...omposite-howto that tell how to get it and use it. I'm pasting the transset stuff here:
Code:

# cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xapps login
[No password needed, just press return]
# cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xapps co transset
# cd transset
# make
# cp transset /usr/X11R6/bin/

Screenshots at:
- http://knix.no-ip.info/xcompmgr/xcompmgr5.png

Forgot to say: to set up a transparency with the program, you have to run it issuing transset with a parameter from 0 to 1 that's transparent to solid. When you run it it waits until you click the target window.
IE: transset 0.5 will set 50% of transparency
transset 0.7 will be 70%, more solid than the other.

hi
I can't get transparencys to work, I installed transset and I edited xorg.conf and nothing, could it be that my tnt2 doens't support it?
here's my xorg.conf, please tell me what am I doing wrong

Have you run:

$ xcompmgr -cCF&

In a terminal ?

drawhla 09-13-2004 11:07 AM

I tried and I get a "command not found" error.
is my xorg.conf right?
did i skip some package that I sould install when I upgraded to xorg 6.8?

drawhla 09-13-2004 11:25 AM

solved it, I forgot to get xcompmgr
anyway, xorgcomp makes everything reeeaaally slow, I guess I'll have to wait until I get a better machine to enjoy transparency
