Hello,

On slackware 14.1-64 bits I have any sound in web browsers (firefox, konqueror and so) on sites like youtube or radios on line

Sound is available on kde and i can listen .wav files on Kplayer.

I installed flash plugin and it is listed in firefox when i type aboutlugins.

Have you any idea to solve that problem ?

Two possible issues to consider are:

Using the command, to install some newer plugin for sounds, plus some slackbuilds, search through slackware.org.uk .
Under Firefox, there are various plugins(txz or slackbuilds) supporting sound codecs. I used various mplayer-*** and vlc, xvid.
Mine sound card is the realtek HD.
and alsamixer would tune the sound volume.

Hmmm... This post is marked as [SOLVED] but I don't see how running slackpkg and installing other codes would solve his problem.

I have exactly the same problem as the original poster. I can play audio CDs on Amarok and KDE plays 'startup' and 'error' wav files properly but youtube just doesn't play any sound although the video plays nicely.

I have installed the latest libflashplayer.so (11 which I downloaded from the Adobe website).

My Slackware 14.1 is installed on a DELL Inspiron 14R 5437. I also have a Realtek HDA device.

I am thinking that the codec installation is fine because KDE and Amarok can use it but Firefox needs to be configured to point to the Realtek codec and I have no idea how to do that.

Any thoughts anyone?

I assume that you're not using OSS4 and that if you were, you would have mentioned it.

But if you are using OSS4, then you need to use Opera. Firefox, Chrome and Chromium do not support OSS4.

Thanks for your reply. But no, I am not using OSS4. I am using ALSA. BTW, Konqueror is also having the same problem.

I gave up on using alsa with hda_intel on my box.
For every slackware release it was big trouble getting it work properly, multiple sounds for instance....

I use oss4 and it works very well here. Even in firefox and other browsers.

IIRC, OSS4 works with Flash and other plugins, but not if the browser itself is expected to play the sounds.

Sadly you are right, no sound on html5 videos.

So that means no sound for the *BSDs either?
Who thought that was a good idea?

I read up on your suggestion to use OSS4 and found that OSS is the old solution for audio on Linux. Now ALSA is built into the kernel so I think ALSA is the way to go.

Also, since KDE and Amarok are working fine with ALSA, I am working towards configuring the browsers to use ALSA instead.

Will update if I find anything worthwhile to share.

I have finally solved my sound problem with Youtube on Firefox.

I was right in deciding to continue working with ALSA but was wrong in thinking that each application needs to be tweaked to point to the codec.

Actually some applications depend on the default sound device to be specified in /etc/asound.conf which is the case here, while some requires you to tell them in the application itself.
