Damn.
Like I tell my kids (who are in their 40's), take a good look, boys, this is what's going to happen to you.
But, really, "old" is just a state of mind -- I know a guy, Ernie, he's 90, he drives down the hill to the neighborhood bar for a couple of beers, he laughs, he plays softball, he laughs, he's a great guy, he gave each of his kids t-shirts with their number on the front (all eight of them including the one that's a nun -- and she wears it), they all laugh a lot, too. I know too many other folks in their 40's that are, pretty much, dried-up husks, no physical problems but no laughter.
Like I said above, I'm 70 and I have a little trouble keeping up with Ernie sometimes.
You're not going to stay young in body, just doesn't happen, but keep your head sharp, get involved, stay involved, laugh as much as possible, have fun, be fun to be around.
Ban over 60 !?!? and by what criteria? physical or mental? Aren't you familiar with the condition known as Transgenarian? This is a very serious medical condition in which self image never advances past 19. Why many of us men still chase women, merely wishing the cane were longer so they could use it to pole vault! It's just so wrong to call such men old. Why..... I oughta!..... ....... what were we talking about?
Oh yeah, it seems two elderly couples were out for a stroll, the ladies chattering up front and the men, Joe and Will, straggling behind. Joe mentioned to Will that "We watched a really good movie on HBO last night" and of course Will inquired "Oh? What was the title?" to which Joe responded "Hmmmmmmm.... my memory isn't quite what it used to be so I'm not certain, but it was really good".
Will noted that "When I get just such a brain cramp I try to use association to pop the memory out... you know, for details and such. Maybe try that?" Joe said "Good idea! OK so what do you call that flower?, you know the one that comes in several colors, often bought for romantic holidays, sometimes with long stems that have thorns on them?"
Will asked "You mean 'rose'?" and Joe brightened right up and says "Yes! That's it! rose!.....Rose! What was the name of that movie we watched last night?"
Ba Dum Pish!
Hell! I'm so old I think I recall having a MySpace account, but Slackware? Started in 1999. Never stopped. Been faithful but did have an occasional NoTell Motel tryst, but then Johnny was a long-legged guitar picker with a wicked, wandering eye.

I am really surprised at what I have found out from this little thread. Good to know there are a lot of us old timers still hacking away with Slack and loving it. lol
I'm "only" 57. But I'm very cantankerous, if that helps any.
My first Slackware install was to a laptop. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I used Slackware 3.4 and about 30 diskettes, because the laptop had no CD drive. After I got finished breaking that first install, I reinstalled using PLIP. I don't know exactly when this would have been, because we didn't use years back then. We just called them "good times".
BTW I'm only 50
When do I start becoming happy as a child? Come on, tell me!
THe day you realize that all that crap you've been worrying about doesn't make a damned bit of difference in the grand scheme of things.
Then you're free and again child like. WOOHOO, I love it! lloooolll

So true. Realize that your anxiety is the cause of 99% of you woes and see it all as the crap it truly is. That's where I'm at - 55.
Hi,
At 75, I am still working full-time as a software engineer ... that is SO pretentious ... we are programmers!
Why am I doing this? ... because it's FUN ... I enjoy it ... it gets me out of bed every day.
Admittedly, the money is nice, but that is not the main thing. There is this bug ... and it is looking at me and challenging me to find it and sort it ... and that is the buzz, the thing that gets me, and as long I can keep on doing it, I will.
I ride a bike .. well a recumbent tricycle, and I will never forget reading an article by a guy called Albert Winstanley ... he was my age .. 75 .. and he said (paraphrasing) "it gets harder and harder to climb the hills, but the thrill going down the other side never diminishes ... and that is how it is with programming ... one may be be able to pull those 24 hour coding marathons any more, but the thrill of finding and squashing those elusive bugs never changes.
So watch out, you whipper-snappers .. you will still be at it in your 70's (and hopefully in your 80's) ... because you love it!

Well I'm 'only' 48 but steadily walking the path
About the OP post, can one start with Slack 2.3 like Widgeteye and
do an upgrade with every new release, just running dd in a couple
of years just to change hard disks? I'm doing this since 13.37 and
all is working fine here (considering my machine limitations).
I already ran one dd on my entire Slack partition,
from a dying 80G hard disk to a new 400G hd.

I think you've nailed it.
I've always felt so lucky that I found the Thing That I'm Good At and that I got to do it for... well, a helluva long time. The work is not physically taxing and, hey, they give you money! Haven't done an all-nighter for lo these many years (and don't wanna, either) but it's still fun and that keep me going.

+1 And how long have you been using a widget for an eye.
Bought a book on Slackware with 5 1/4" floppys inside the back cover. It didn't include X, so downloaded that over a modem, 1200 baud I think. I started it one night; it was still running all the next day, and finished some time the next night.
63 years right now, and computer user since late 1969.
I no longer slack much. Tried it but there are far too many great toys in this business to be pinned to just one.
I figure I will be buried with my (rooted android) cell phone and be hacking from heaven.
60 at the end of this month. Been a Slacker since 12.1 or 12.2 I think. Dabble with other distros from time to time. Nothing really comes close to Slackware for me.
