Antialiasing in KDE 3.1 in slack9

Hi everybody,
Consider me to be an absolute newbie in the X antialiasing arena. I previously used rh 7.1 and recently switched to slack 9.
But the KDE fonts dont look as smooth and pretty as the screenshots I see everywhere. I guessed antialiasing is at the root of all this. However at the first start of KDE, when in the options I selected antialiased fonts, the fonts became quite terrible

Please tell me how to get those smooth fonts in KDE 3.1. In gnome the fonts are (probably) antialiased but they look thicker than I would like. Is there a way to change that too ?

Get the BITSTREAM VERA fonts. They are much better than the fonts that come w/ Slack 9 (and in fact will be the default, in Slack 9.1). Search google for them.

Install them, and make sure you select them (obviously) and turn on anti aliasing and everything should be fine.

On font "thickness", antialiased fonts are always thicker. It takes a little while to get used to, but your eyes will thank you.

Also, not all programs use system fonts. Programs like Mozilla and others need to be recompiled with "XFT" enabled to allow for AA fonts. Make sure you have Freetype installed though.
