Another stab at it

I am fooling around with the kernel all the time and now I have 4 computers with Slackware. I would like to create my own drop-in kernel packages so that I can build each arch just once, and this seems like a good thread to discuss the ways to do it. What I want is a package that contains just enough to boot and to make custom drivers (in my case, Nvidia). I figured, I need image and map in /boot, and modules in /lib/modules. But do I also need to package firmware in /lib/firmware? This is unclear to me, since it's one big pile, not separated by kernel version. And if I also build custom drivers (like Nvidia), do I need the full source as well?
