Another noob question

What would be the best precompiled kernal to use for my laptop? It is a Dell Latitude CPX-J650GT, I used the default off the CD but I have no sound. Also my system does not see the Buffalo wireless card that I have installed either. Thanks in advance. BTW I have to agree with everyone else about how slack has made me learn about how to work linux instead of just use it. :D

You may have to type 'alsamixer' then turn everything otherwise the sound may be muted. When you get the sound right using alsamixer, type 'alsactl store' (from root) to save the settings.

Zero, I am using Slack 10 also and although I'm not hearing a sound everytime I
do something. But I have read about it and there is a way to turn it off. Do a search.

cheers

if you use kde
control panel>sound & multimedia>sound system>enable sound system
or just to turn off certain sounds
control panel>sound & multimedia>system notifications>[modify individual alerts]

I figured it out, now I need to learn how to setup my buffalo wireless card. its a WLI-CB-G54A once I can get that working I can connect to the net from home instead of just from work. I have heard of linuxtant (SP?) but being a noob I still don't know how to install new software. I understand the concept of compiling but only in windoze terms. Any good guides to teach me on installing software before I do a search? BTW Thanks for all the help.

i recommend reading the "readme" or "install" files that
accompany the software you download.

as far as the wireless connection, i used linux-wlan-ng
to get my D-Link DWL-122 usb wireless adapter working.
