I can see CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO just before the last line in your post

Also I did not put the reference for my IDE controler which is :
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_AMD74XX=y

And another IDE feature :
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_GENERIC=y
(Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support)

my bad, sorry.

Well I tried again and it still didn't work. But I think I know what may have happened. I have a win2k partition on /dev/hda1. I was using it the other day, just for printing and I used ext2ifs to read my linux partition, to back-up files. It didn't work. I never thought anything of this until I had to use win2k again and there it was staring at me. I believe that must be the source of the problem. I returned all settings to the original and will now have another attempt at the kernel compile. I hope it works. Thanks for all the help.

The reason I had to use win2k was cos I accidently deleted the 2.4.26 kernel modules (don't ask me how -- I feel enough of a prat!) and X isn't working right now.

I had the same problem. Do you have a SATA drive? I did and got that same error. I built into the kernel the "Support for SATA" driver in Device Drivers > ATA/blah > about 4 row down. That fixed it for me.

Kcmd, don't give up, when you will get some free time, do no hesitate to re-try a kernel compile but from a backup of your 2.4.27 config, try with the 2.4.27 first, disable some option at one time (maybe write these options in a paper, in case), try reboot and so on, you will find the required feature that cause your problem.

No, I have IDE disk drives. Cannot figure it out.

I'll return to it another time Cedrick, just bloody frustrated right now.

hi there,

as frustration blocks the mind, here's my advice ( based on experience ) :

just let the whole thing sink in for a couple of days and then try again.
maybe then you can solve it or maybe you won't even see the error again.
in any case you will get it working and your pc. will know again who's the boss. ( and that's a good feeling.... )

actully got bored, followed cedrick's advice, used slackware config, made no changes (except to directly include ext3 in the kernel) and now it works. So thanks for all the help. Will back up this kernel and it's modules and try to figure what out caused the problem.
