Have you tried the procedure outlined in the documentation, see: http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:hardwareroprietary_graphics_drivers?

The fglrx driver has an integrated SlackBuild and can create a package out of it, if you specify it during the installation.

You can get it on the AMD website.

However, I wasn't pleased with the performance. I recommend using the latest Mesa open source drivers, they work much better for me (Radeon HD 6800) and are maintained by a small team of official developers from AMD. Just look at my signature for packages and SlackBuilds for the latest Mesa.

The Proprietary driver works best on newer cards but it will support gaming better. The free Mesa driver will work better on legacy cards not supported by the proprietary driver. It will lack some support vectors such as the latest OpenGL extensions and S3TC support (can be added via a supplement library), and does require the latest libdrm, kernel, and xf86-video-ati driver.

To be honest either will work though results will vary person to person.
