I did not know about driconf. I'll try it out.

mattallmill, your instructions worked out splendidly. I now have catalyst installed and, as far as I can tell, working without a hitch. Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you mattallmill!!

Guess waiting a few days pays off (in my case, been busy elsewhere), as it tends to be, there's always someone else who had the problem before me

I'll try your steps as well (just need the kernel etc sorted first).

This started out as a sort of personal challenge for me. The 4.2 kernel had been panicking when it first came out, and I thought I'd give it another try. Then I thought to search for the patches for the Catalyst driver via Arch, and modified my procedure to apply the patches for Slackware. I was very pleased with the results.

You're welcome! I'm glad my little project was able to help a couple of other people out as well. It's always good to know that my personal project is beneficial.

According to Phoronix, AMD's planning on a big driver update, one's that supposedly supports the 4.x kernel (No word on if it goes to 4.2.x or not). So, in all probability, this fix will only be temporary. Nevertheless, even as a temporary fix, it was definitely worth doing.

You're welcome. I thought you'd like to know that, so you could keep an eye out for it. More than likely, one of the major Linux tech news sites like Phoronix will let you know when it's released.

In case anyone is interested in patching the existing Catalyst driver for the newest kernel, 4.3, I have attached the patchset for it. Follow my tutorial to patch it.

Matt

No, the patch won't be enough, because the Xorg in 14.2 is too new for the Catalyst drivers. You can't install them in Slackware 14.2 unless you can find some way to downgrade Xorg without breaking the rest of the system (it would probably require a lot of recompiling of many different packages that rely on Xorg and there's no guarantee it would work).

But the open source radeon driver that is included with 14.2 is usually enough for most cards that it supports. What issues are you running into?

Last time I was installing linux drivers was for Nvidia geforce 4 MMX 440 on red hat 9. So smooth... but now I would like to do the same with my radeon hd 7970 and slackware 14.2 and don't know how to achieve best performance. I would like to play 3d games. Is radeon driver really best choice?
