Alternative to xine...
I need something other than xine to stream videos and sound online that use .avi or .wmp extensions, let alone any type of file.
Xine's interface is incredibly annoying to me and I would like something that is pre compiled for Slack so I can just give the sh -i installation command and not have to worry about anything else as I don't have the time to mess with it now.
Thanks in advance.

You should check out mplayer and vcl. There are also other front ends for xine.

I am assuming there are no precompiled versions of vlc or mplayer for Slackware, eh?

Sweetness, I now have VLC and MPlayer installed. However, I still need to stream things and I deleted my xine plugin to Firefox...does MPlayer have any plugins for Firefox so I can view/hear movies and music?

VLC also has a FireFox plugin, though I have never managed to compile it...

So for now, I'm using MPlayer.
If anyone can point me to a good tutorial or perhaps a complete slackpack with all the codecs compiled in (yeah, I know, not likely), I would apprciate it.

If using mplayer plugin please be aware that it interferes with realplayer plugin so(like for bbc and wbgo jazz radio) if you need realplayer plugin function you will need to edit mplayer plugin file to comment out its realplayer "plugin" part. Do LQ search for said problem if it is pertinent. Enjoy your mplayer.

Here it is http://jmccoy.sdf-us.org/linux/multimedia.php
This is a little bit outdated but it also works if you want to compile everything.
This is what I did:
Get all the needed available packages from linuxpackages.net, the ones that Ken Zalewski build (not sure 'bout the correct spelling of the name). The ones that are missing you have to compile yourself. Use the home page of VLC to see what you need. This is what I did on a 10.2 stock system. Then I compiled VLC with all possible options and dependencies. It works perfectly well. And don't use the latest version of VLC, get 0.82. I couldn't compile 0.84a, it always gave me some error.
I don't like mplayer at all. It loads my processor (2.4GHz P4) too much, it's not stable enough. I use xine extensively. If it can't play anything I use VLC. In my opinion VLC is the best player ever. It has so many tweaks and plays all formats.

If it is mainly the UI you don't like about Xine, but the functionality is ok with you, you might try Kaffeine. It is available from LinuxPackages.net as a Slackware package.
