Alternative to fileroller
Since Gnome is gone now does anyone know an alternative to fileroller? Specifically I want to open zips from firefox with a gui. Sometimes I only want to get a quick look at the readmes etc.

If you are using KDE, then you can install ark. I am not sure if anything exists thats desktop neutral.

I like EmelFM or XFE for my GUI file management needs. You could try Konqueror, if you have KDE. Rox-filer is said to be a good file manager to, but I don't use it personally

I also have EmelFM but I didn't realize it could open zips too. That's the way to go I think. Thanks.
*Edit: seems not to work from firefox or command like 'emelfm /tmp/xxx.zip'

EmelFM has the UNPACK plugin that will open zip files into /tmp, but as you have noticed, you will have to go to where the archive is and open it for it to work

Looks like konqueror will work. I use flux but still have kdebase installed for some kde bits and bobs.

Midnight Commander can browse zip files, and I would wager it's much faster than konqueror.

Actually, ncurses plays nice with gpm and X where mouse usage is concerned

Unfortunately the internal viewer will only list files in a zip. It doesn't allow to view one. At least not for me so far.
I've been using 'mc -v xxx.zip' command, so unless there is another way, or maybe an extension for zips, it doesn't seem to be what I need.

Hmm... I guess I spoke too soon. mc can certainly browse zip files, but you need to start mc first and then press [Enter] on the zip file - as far as I can tell there's no way to exhibit this behaviour straight from the prompt.

You may want to try this one: http://xarchiver.xfce.org/features.php
There are actually a lot of this kind of utilities, it's just a matter of searching on the www. The one I gave you the address up there is a "alive" project, and seems to meet your needs.

Thanks thats a nice find. A simple GTK frontend. Most of ones I found needed gnome or had other problems.
