alt key doesn't work in AbiWord, XChat, Firefox

My alt key doesn't work only in XChat, AbiWord and Firefox. What is it that these apps have in common? All I can think of is that (1) they use X and (2) they use GTK. Does anyone else experience this? Google offers nothing. What could I do next to get my alt key working? Thoughts?

By the way, I am on a Slamd64 11.0 stock, and experience this same problem on a stock Slack11 box.

Here are the relevant sections of my xorg.conf:

There is no mention of "us layout" in my xorg.conf. Where would I find that information out?

why don't you add some lines to your xorg.conf?

msantinho: I entered those commands into my xorg.conf and it the alt key still doesn't work in ff and abiword. What exactly are these commands, anyways?
