alsamixer won't start

i've spent all evening collecting and installing the various required libraries and programs to compile ardour (liux sound software), but now i'm stuck on these alsa sound drivers. when i try to get the alsamixer to run (to turn up the volume from the default of zero), it gives me this message:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

i've searched (in vain) for over an hour through google to find an answer to this problem, as many other people have also reported this problem. i couldn't find anything that indicates a solution anywhere, but i know this has to be something basic.

my ultimate goal requires more work, as after this i must (1) get the jack server (jackd) running and interfacing w/ my sound card and (2) get further in making ardour start properly. anything that serves to propel in this direction, even if not quite directly relevant, is helpful.

any suggestions are welcome.

thx for reading,
y-p

ALSA ERROR: function snd_ctl_open failed for default

I also have a problem installing ALSA. Sound was working fine except for in flash and realplayer which prompted this upgrade installation to alsa.

FULL ERROR: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

Im running Red Hat 9 with the 2.4.20-20.9 latest kernel using the SiS 7012 onboard sound. [wondering if kernel version might be the problem].

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times making minor changes such as using "./cvscompiler" rather than "./configure" - I went over the installation very closely.

etc/modules.conf file looks ok. I have not made an .asoundrc file as I read somewhere that this did not fix other posters with similiar issues - plus roomie did not not make one either - 'sides it should work without.

My roomate installed successfully with the Soundblaster live/RH9/packaged kernel[2.4.8-20???] - he got the same error until he re-modprobed everything then his worked. NB when I ran lsmod on his box I see all the modules are listed as being "tainted -p" and they all have
(autoclean) in front of the modules - - mine DO NOT. Hmm - anyone know anything about this???
e.g from my box:
[snd-seq-oss 34144 0 (unused)
snd-seq-midi-event 6080 0 [snd-seq-oss]
snd-seq 46992 2 [snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi-event]

I tried booting and going back to the original packaged kernel listed in grub, then uninstalling and reinstalling everything but I get the error that the kernel version is not fully installed and it asks to install the kernel with all the packages et cetera - basically goes nowhere.

ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS OR FIXES? I would really appreciate it. In the meantime I will continue to search and search...in silence.

Mossy again, I forgot to mention that the sound card is not detected - e.g:

[root@xyz root]# /etc/init.d/alsasound start
Starting sound driver: snd-intel8x0 done
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1134: No soundcards found...

em....wait a bleed'in minute....

hmmm...im r3@lly perplexed now....sound IS working...!? I turned up the volume with the default RH volume controller.

Sound works with cd-rom & Mplayer...

...even though there is no sound card detected by the RH Soundcard detector [error: the i810_audio driver could not be loaded. This soundcard my not be supported with Red Hat Linux] ... SO...I click ok and hear the beautiful guitar and YES I did hear the sound [and yes it IS BETTER than how it used to sound!! - no crackling]. Absolutely crazy.

All the same I would like to get the AlSA mixer working - so I can manipulate sound properly.

Here's a test on Flash plugin and Realplayer plugin:

REAPLAYER: The fancy little audio intro craps out when opening realplayer [this works if I run esd but the rest of the sound sounds crap having selected esd in the Prefs] test the player on http://www.irelandlivetelevision.tv/ and it sounds MUCH BETTER than before installing ALSA. Brilliant. :)

FLASH: Oooo yeah : http://www.halley.cc/jaime/feder/index.html plays wonderfully - it used to sound like the CHIPMONKS. Sounds lovely now. :)

Me is a happy camper now.

However I would still appreciate any feed back on:
a) why the alsamixer is not working
b) why everything tells me my sound card is not detected.
c) why there is no Shockwave player for games etc and is there any eqivalent?

Hope my info helps others. I knew it would be worth it - persevere.

Perchance that you are actually using the OSS drivers instead?

alsamixer won't start

thanks for the input Azmeen you are correct. When I do the modprobing I am completely removing all sound modules to my knowledge. If I am only loading the modules from the installation instructions - the oss drivers are being loaded at that time.

Is it possible for you [or anyone else] to explain alittle more about the oss drivers as opposed to what I should be using [?] for ALSA? THANKS

NB - I noticed that after using the sound that the oss drivers now have (autoclean) on them. Interesting.
