Alsa, soundblaster 5.1 & rear speakers

Hi,
I am using Slackware 9.0, kernel 2.4.22 and recently i compiled ALSA 0.9.8.
The sound works only for the front speakers. There is no sound coming out from the rear speakers...
The alsamixer is not working also. I get this message:
Quote:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
I can use only the oss mixer. BUT there is not a OGAIN slider. Why??

Thanks in advance.

Does anybody have a solution to this??
I am searching for days and i haven't found anything anywhere for this...

Finally I found out by luck about the rear speakers....
SB Live Analog/Digital Output Jack [Off] in alsamixer...

I think many people are having setup problems with alsa at the moment.
I decided to move to alsa from oss when I upgraded to 9.1.
Finally got it all working after many problems, one being sound in only one channel!
turns out that I had to increase the 'Maximum no of probed mixers' in KDE's Sound System/Mixer settings page - took me a while to find this as I did not realize that aRTS controlled this.

also found some useful info here:

esp the ALSA Soundcard Matrix section
