ALSA SOund Issue - 2.4.31
I installed a clean install of Slack with 2.4.31 and I was planning to upgrade straight to 2.6, but I thought I would like to have a look at the 2.4.31 kernel for fun. I removed a lot of stuff I thought I didn't need, like everything except VESA Framebuffer from the graphics drivers section (I have a GeForce FX5500 and use their proprietry drivers), I also removed most of the soundcard drivers. I have a Soundblaster Live! and need the emu10k1 module, installed as a module. When Slack installs from the CD the sound always works. As soon as I fiddle with a kernel compile it always seems to fux up on me. So I loaded up the backed up .config (the one from the default install) and recompiled. I fiddled a bit in there, but nothing to do with sound. I removed firewire support and very little else. Recompiled.
Now I still get an error at startup: modprode: can't locate module snd-emu10k1. How can that be? I asked for it to be installed as a module like it wants? Any ideas as to what to do? I really, really want to get my own custom kernel with everyhting working. I think I might just try a 2.6 and start over instead of trying to fix this, but if anyone can shed some light on this issue I would like to know, for future reference.

Did you 'make', 'make modules_install'?

I did, I followed the kernel compile guide for 2.4.* thats in this forum to the letter. Ah well, I probably did something wrong. I'll just go with the 2.6 kernel, at least I have gotten that working in the past!

I have the same problem , if someone could please help....
all i have done is add SMP support to the kernel from the original .config for 2.4.31
everything is fine other than that. i did do, make modules and make modules_install
i have tried to run alsaconf, but it says that no compatible ISA or PCI cards found
+EDIT+ uninstalling the alsa driver and re-installing, seems to have fixed it
just ran, pkgtool
then uninstalled the alsa driver
