Alsa + slacware10 = limited sound

okay, i'm not a total newbie to linux.. but i'm fairly new to slackware. i'm running slackware 10 and for some reason, when i set up ALSA, it detects my nforce2 card and installs the drivers. but when i try to play sound with more than one application (example xmms and totem) totem will crash, no two apps can use sound at the same time, so i cant even play noises on GAIM while listening to music... its just kinda irritating.. i know its not a problem with my sound cards ability to do so, because under windoze it worked fine.. i just need to know how to configure my sound fully..
does anyone have any help?

i've tried .asoundrc and asound.conf with no avail.. i'm pulling at straws now.. but if someone knows what to do, i'll dance from joy
thanx

Try alsaconf to reconfigure it.
If all else fails - use aRtsD.

see "Sound can't multitask" thread

[stamp-answer-begin]
Short answer: That behavior you described is normal.

Long answer: Universally accepted, full-proof software sound mixing (a la DirectX, DirectShow) is not implemented in Linux by default. You have to use sound applications that use the same "sound server" like aRts (KDE) or whatever (ESD i think) (Gnome) for playing all of your files. Otherwise, you get the Three Stooges effect on the sound card input.
Alternatively you can to set up a dmix for ALSA, but, switching away from XMMS to your-desktop-environment-based MP3 player is easier.
