Alsa problem with C-media CMI9880

Is there someone with such sound card and reasonable number of controls for it in mixers? I use Slackware 12. Mixer in Kde shows PCM and PC speaker in OUT section. The sound card is 7.1 channel and in Windows I can use all the 6 stereo output and input lines.

The problem is that music sounds quite sharp with no bass actually. At work I use Slackware 11 with no patches. The sound card is quite simple but it produces a remarkable sound and in mixer there are a dozen controls for it.

I suppose I have to use another sound driver but now alsa is in kernel. Do I need to try different kernel.

This sounds like no big deal but when you listen to the music with headphones the stupid sound is driving me crazy and brings me headache.

So please help. I will try all kind of ideas.

Hi,

Did you run 'alsamixer' as root for initial setup? Be sure to run 'alsactl store' after the mixer setup. Then reboot.

`alsaconf` before running `alsamixer` may be beneficial as well.

I made a bit of thinking ........

Thanks but I have already done these. May be I wasn't clear the first time - I have a working sound card. I just wanted to know is there a way to make the music sound better.

After I've written the post I suddenly realized that may be there was actually no problem with my sound. As it was supposed to output 7.1 channel surround sound it was clear the sound had to be split in several parts. And using headphones plugged in where the "Front left&right" speakers were supposed to be, I got just the part for the front left&right channel.

That is my conclusion as a non expert in sound distribution. May be there is a way to use this plug as a real stereo output for my headphones but I don't know it.

Thanks again for the help
