alsa problem KDE-3.3.1

Installed KDE-3.3.1 on a new box with Slack-10 and kernel 2.4.26.
At runlevel 3 aplay tada.wav gives sound.
Under KDE the message:
Playing WAVE 'tada.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 22050 Hz, Stereo,
but no sound.
Realplay 10 and KsCD function properly, but MPLayer in firefox plays video
without sound.
If I start fluxbox from runlevel 3, aplay and MPlayer are OK.
Sound on another box with KDE-3.2.1 is OK.
Sound settings in configuration centre are the same on both boxen.
Is this a KDE-bug?

Hi

Reading your post I was reminded of a comment in a review of KDE 3.3.0 that I read recently.

All it said when mentioning a few gripes was:

"...streaming in amorak appeared to be broken, but simply switching to Gstreamer as the audio engine sorted it out." (Linux Format issue 60)

I presume that this means switching from arts to Gstreamer as the KDE sound server but I have not looked at KDE 3.3.x yet and so haven't experienced this problem myself or seen how the sound system differs.

But maybe this is of some help to you.

Well I certainly have the idea something is broken in KDE-3.3.1.

I'll have a look in Gstreamer.

Thank you
