I was unable to find version 1.0.24 for Slackware so I downloaded and used 1.0.23 instead. I used installpkg to install the update. I checked the version number of alsa but it doesn't seem to have changed. I looked over the Debian guides and it did not require any more steps other then installing it. Thanks

Code:
$cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.

Do you only have one soundcard? since it looks like you got one Intel and one ATI for HDMI on your graphics card.
So you might need to tell skype or alsa what audio device to use.

Let's look at your devices
Code:
arecord -l
Now let's try the mic by recording 7 seconds and play it.
Code:
 arecord -d 7 mic-test.wav
 aplay mic-test.wav
I did this and all I get is static.
