ALSA Permissions .....

Can someone explane to me why ALSA works in root but not in users the is a list if mods I have already tryed:

chmod 666 /dev/audio*
chmod 666 /dev/snd*
chmod 666 /dev/dsp*
chmod 666 /dev/mixer*

And it still says I dont have permission can someone suguest something?
my ALSA drivers are built in to the kernel so there are no modules, but that should not be a problem because if root has sound then why does the rest of the users have to use OSS? ..

OSS works the problem is having to switch it back and forth to play Quake 3 is getting rather annoying.

Thanks Crypty

Which is the error message you got exactly ?

I had a similar problem, so i set permissions : rw-rw--w- to /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p and it worked.

LOL I fixed it by removing the problem forever .. I kill the ARTS sever .. I figure I don't need it ... Quake 3 , XMMS and a whole bunch more proggies run at the same time with no problem ....

What is the point of ARTS? I mean really?
