Question alias emails in dovecot mysql postfix setup

I am following http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:net..._dovecot_mysql to setup a mail server with vitual users/domains. I have previously used sendmail which uses /etc/aliases which are local and can point to other local aliases, email addresses, remote email addresses, and even pipe to programs or scripts.
Can anyone explain what is allowed for aliases as used in the howto?.
the source is obviously an email address with a domain managed by the server, but what are the restrictions on the destination?

I am writing a script to manage domains, users and aliases as used by the tutorial, so need to know what is allowed for checking purposes (and what will work with postfix/dovecot/mysql.)
