/etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.18/modules.dep
and when i type lspci -vv i get this:
00.07.5 Multimedia Audio Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC 97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co Ltd: Unknown Device 3092
and some more info, but i can't really copy that text from my terminal :S
/etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.18/modules.dep
This doesn't look like an error to me - just a information. It's like Postfix notifiying you if you use SASL that /etc/sasldb is more recent than /var/spool/postfix/etc/sasldb, etc. (if running chrooted).
What does lsmod say ?
What about insmod ac97_codec ?

Rep:
there are several modules that have to be inserted for
sound to work. go to your modules directory
and insmod anything with oss or mixer or pcm in the
name.
