I just upgraded onboard intel graphics to nvidia gtx1060. First I flashed the system bios to most recent. Then I installed pcie card. It ran in console, where I installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39.run and blacklisted the nouveau module. Rebooted to enforce the blacklist, and X is working great, without black screen consoles before or after starting X from runlevel 3. So updating NVIDIA driver is probably all that's needed.

Excellent!

Most monitors were never affected by this issue.
