advice using reiserfsck

Hi,

I was wondering of someone could help me out with a problem I have with my HD.

On booting I get the following message (if I've written it down correctly)...

File system marked as cleanly umounted
Replaying journal
Replaying journal /dev/hda5 in block [18..811]: 0 transaction replay

It then goes on to do some sort of check on the partition /dev/hda5 (which gets mounted as /usr/local/)

The same happens with /dev/hda6 (which gets mounted as /home)

All of this started happening after a power cut (and stupidly I didn't have a power surge protector to ensure against these problems).

I'm thinking that the hard-drive has been damaged in some way, and as both partitions are mounted as reiserfs I want to use reiserfsck to check and repair any problems.

Now I'm wondering if I can safely comment out the line that mounts /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6 from /etc/fstab, boot into run mode 3 (using slack 10, so this is command line), and then run reiserfsck from there.

The thing I'm not sure about is will I be able to boot if these partitions are not mounted (in particular /dev/hda5 which is mounted as /usr/local/)?

I guess it might depend on my setup, but then I thought that the kernel image is on /boot and the modules are most likely in / which is on a separate partition that will be mounted. Obviously any programs installed on the unmounted partitions won't be available, so I'll ensure any I need are copied to /bin/ for the process.

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't want to trash my system (I'm going to make backups of everything before trying any of this out).

Thanks in advance

The lines :

File system marked as cleanly umounted
Replaying journal
Replaying journal /dev/hda5 in block [18..811]: 0 transaction replay

...mean that a normal shutdown was done before this boot (cleanly umounted) from the point of view of the reiser fs automatic check.

You asked for a jounaled filesystem (replay transaction in reiserfs term), now you have it and all run fine, when problem occur, it says "File system marked as NOT cleanly umounted"
