better stick to the subject ( without large textblocks... )

Well, I suppose I knew better than to reply to a networking thread. Theres always atleast one self righteous <removed> on evrey one. Go fsck yourself. This IS a forum, is it not? <removed>
Sorry cykoburn, <profanity removed> I've gotten a home portal working in Redhat and not a single damn thing I said is irrelevant. Good luck with your problem tho. Wonderfull people like egag just insure that your support base here stays minimal.
This is what sounds like is going on and this is what I'm referring to. Your 2Wire is designed to be setup in conjunction with WINDOWS software. You can't just plug it in, set it up thru netconfig and expect everything to be fine and dandy. egag obviously hasn't worked with a 2Wire before. Go to your setup web interface. Do your stuff there and then it will start talking to your computer, and try sticking with DHCP before you try static on your end...
I know you can't connect to the router but unless you focus on that, your router isn't going to talk to the computer before you set it up. I find it amusing that he is echoing points from my post (init1 and setup page) but yet it's still crap.
jong357>exept for the link, you just posted more crap of even a lower level.
i even reread your first post and i stick to my opinion.
and if you really don't have any other way than making personnel offends, you're just out of line.
( plz. don't ask me what i think of you... )
i suggest you read the rules of this forum .
( btw. you're still free to cleanup your posts and show yourself a decent person )
Hi,
Iīve just been reading these posts but before u go off looking for the problem can u tell me what sort of setup u have, just one PC connecting or is it a shared connection?
Do u know if the nic is configured, try ifconfig -a and post the output.
I have noticed that if there is an on board ethernet and a nic there can be some confusion as to the denomination of eth0 and eth1, so check ur hardware.
hope this helps

and egag, diplomacy costs nothing - in future, try to be a little more polite when disagreeing with posts.
Hey i got my problem fixed, thanx to all your help.
for people who my might be having the same problem here's what i did to fix it.
I set my netconfig at dhcp all default escept hostname
and set my adsl-setup up
Also im using sbcglobal, so if anyone has the same problem just reply to this post and hopefully i can help
I'm trying to decide whether to let SBC rape me for the 2wire modem/router and go from there(since I wanted to set up a debian linux box for home use instead of this POS win2000 i'm using now) or if I should keep the old Alcatel 1000 modem I am currently using and go grab a wireless router like the Linksys WRT54GS or SMC 2804WBR and add NICs....speaking of which....what NIC are you using?
I hate to sound particularly naive, but isn't SBC ADSL subject to authentication? Did you check the NIC lights for a connection and ar eyou getting an authorizarion time-out?
SBC at it's best sucks, and being yahell sbc adsl has ties to Redmond.. You'd be better off running a dual modem emulated ISDN.
A word to the wise tho. SBC won't let you hold on to an IP like alot of providers will. I've heard stories of SBC users getting knocked off when DHCP sent a refresh signal. Also, if they use bridged IP addresses ( most often for ADSL) you won't be able to run any DNS services.
