Add second subnet on eth0 to configure new wifi router

I use static IP addresses on the LAN; they're in the subnet 192.168.55.0. I need to access and configure a new wireless access point which has a default IP address of 192.168.2.1. I used to know the syntax to add a route to that IP address on dev eth0:1 (or eth0:0) but no longer have that information saved.

When I try this command,

route add 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0:1

the response is the netmask does not match the network.

What is the correct syntax to add a different subnet to eth0 so I can access the wireless router using a web browser and configure it to the 192.168.55.0 subnet?

I guess my response was not accepted the first time.

The solution is to issue the command,

ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.2.2 up

This adds a new route and lets me access the router via firefox.
