Add Engines does not work under Firefox 1.06 or 1.07

Hello,

Does any one know why the 'Add Engines' feature of Firefox does not work for me under Slackware 10.2 for versions 1.06 and 1.07. The feature works just fine under Firefox 1.5 Beta 1.

I think you need to change the permissions on the /usr/lib/firefox-version/searchplugins directory, so that the user running Firefox can write to it. This will allow you, as the user, to install any search plugins you like. Once they are installed, the permissions on the directory can be restored to what they were beforehand.
Anyway, that's how I've done it.

Yes, that's true. It's really really stupid.

User changes SHOULD ALWAYS be written to ~/.mozilla, but search plugins don't.

I noticed that it didn't work, but when i took "chown -R <myuser>:users /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.7", it worked. So I just do that, and then I chown back to root:root afterwards.

I agree that it's bad design.
At least there's a workaround for it.

Thanks everyone I have just added some engines to the list. Is it necessary to chown back to root:root for the plugins directory? Are there any securty threats?

Well, you can do what you like, but both people who have responded to you have already suggested that you change the permissions back once you've installed the search plugins you'd like to use.

re: add engines does not work

All I did was start firefox as root and add the engine.
