Activate NIC or eth1 or 0

Hi,

I have installed Slackware successfully. I'm just trying to activate my NIC's. I'm pretty sure I have loaded the modules for the two different cards. These modules are natsemi and via-rhine.

Now, I just don' know how to configure. I can ping ok.

I am very new to linux and about 1 week old to Slackware.

I know how to activate in Fedora but not Slackware. So any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Michshelly

At a command prompt type: ifconfig -a

Do eth0 and eth1 show up? If so you can use netconfig to set them up.

Hi Ryanoa

Thanks for your speedy reply. I've tried that and also did it by typing ifconfig eth0 blar blar blar for both eth0 and eth1.

I still cannot connect to the internet or ping my rounter.

I typed ifup eth0 or ifup eth1 but these commands are not found in Slackware. I thought Linux was the same through out all the distros!

I don't know where to find the network settings in the GUI of Slackware either. Hmnnn, what a pain!

"ifconfig eth0 up" is the command to bring up an ethernet controller.
Did you use "netconfig" to set up your cards?

If you can't get anywhere we're going to need more info. You could post the output of: lspci, lsmod, and ifconfig -a

Hi ryanoam

Here's the output for lspci:

Ethernet Controller National Semi Conductor DP83815 (macPhyter)
Ethernet Controller Via Technologies VT6102 [Rhine-11] (rev 78)

I think Rhine is the card that connects to my router.

lsmod:

natsemi 15680 1
via-rhine 12336 1
mii 2272 0 [via-rhine]
crc32 2880 0 [natsem via-rhine]

ifconfig -a:

eth0 192.168.1.69
eth1 192.168.1.70
lo local loopback

I hope this is the correct information.

Thanks again ryanoa

How is the router handing out ip addresses? By dhcp or statically?

Network settings for your interfaces are stored in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf

Hi ryanoa

I have these settings:

Local DHCP Server: enabled
Auto Detect Lan DHCP server: disabled
Starting ip address 192.168.1.64

That probably explains a lot hey! I'll have to have a play around with all of those settings.

Thank you ryanoa, reading your posts pointed me in the right direction, my eth0 died and i had to switch to eth1 (onboard)
just wanted to add that after doing all you said i needed to
Code:
/sbin/dhcpcd -d -t 10 eth1
hopefully this will help some other fellow newbies

(ps. every time i have a problem, use "search" or google around i end up getting the answer from fellow slackers)
now, on to try doing the same on gentoo/freebsd partitions....
