Accelerated NVidia Drivers (2.6.1)

Sorry to bring up a oft-brought up subject like this but I have searched the forums and read the Nvidia readme for the last hour and a half.

On the pc with the problems, I have Slackware 9.1 with 2.6.1 kernel.
I downloaded the latest nvidia installers, which DOES support 2.6.x, so i shouldnt need any patches to the installer.
The installer went fine without a problem, the nvidia driver can be loaded fine with "modprobe nvidia".
I changed the XF86Config file of a previously working config file, and all I changed was Driver from "nv" to "nvidia. (as directed)
and uncommented "Load "glx"" (as directed)

Every time I try to startx, the screen goes black and thats it. I cant ctrl+alt+backspace, I cant ctrl+alt+delete. System goes unresponsive.
So I have to reboot manually everytime.

I even tried to be ssh'ed in when i tried startx to look at the xf86 log file but the ssh freezes up too. So its my whole system that locks up and not just my video.

Also, when I reboot and check out the Xf86 log file it doesnt have any errors or warning in it. Everything is labeled as informational or probed.

Does this sound like a problem with my kernel config or a driver problem?

I've had the same problem. It was an AGP problem, and the solution was variously either using

Option "NvAGP" "1"

or

Option "NvAGP" "2"

depending on my kernel at the time.

Also using

Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV"

also seemed to help on my MX440 8x AGP card.

Wow, I tried the "Option "NvAGP" "1"" and "2" and neither worked.
I figured all was lost, then I tried the "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV" and viola!
the damn thing works.
Thanks alot man Ive wasted two hours on this for that little line that NVidia neglected to mention in any of the FAQ's.
Thanks again for the help and quick response.
