Abiword alternative
I know there are probably quite a few alternative word processors, but I use abiword quite a lot as I don't need an office suite. I noticed it was dropped from current, so either I'll have to install KDE or find something else. I don't really want koffice or openoffice. Are there any good alternatives that don't require kde or gnome? Otherwise I'll use latex I supopose.

Abiword runs on Gnome perfectly. It doesn't need KDE. And I assume that it's part of the Goffice package. I might be wrong though..

How about compiling Abiword yourself. The last time I did that, it didn't take long or require too many dependencies. You can also create your own packages with checkinstall.

If I remember the Changelog correctly, compiling Abiword without Gnome has become problematic.
If you go the LaTeX route, you might take a look at Texmaker or LyX. The only relatively lightweight word processor that does everything I want it to do is WordPerfect 8, but that has its own problems. (Closed source abandonware, requires old libraries, etc.)

Yes, abiword requires gnome, which is why it's being dropped. I don't usually have kde either. I use fluxbox. I've heard of Lyx but never tried it. I've used latex a bit. This obviously isn't an issue until slackware 11.0 comes out. But afaik, at the moment, abiword is the only standalone wordprocessor that comes with slackware 10.2.

I hated Abiword and uninstalled it. OpenOffice may have a huge bloat factor but it works and supports everything and more. If you don't want a giant package like that, look at Nedit or Bluefish. I don't think they'll support microslop formats, though.
P.S. I don't use gnome or KDE

So the basic answer is no. I'll have to use an office suite.

I guess it all depends on one's needs, hardware, and usage.
I use an old box (PII 266) with 128 MB RAM, i need something lite and fast, and my writing needs are basic. I write everything in blocks and save in .txt format, that way anybody can read it.
So after after trying a lot of programs and discarding them because of bloat or speed, i ended up with my text editor Joe. It's fast and only weighs ~700 MB.
It offers me the basics needs: wordwrap, block copying and pasting, centering, block formatting, and it's super configurable you can use one Fn key for most actions (i.e. save/exit = F10). It took me a couple of hours to be confortable with it.
Like i said, if you don't need fancy writing...
How to customize Joe

Yes but OP doesn't want gnome or kde.
And I would still like an answer to my questions about that abiword slack package.
LyX seems quite good for word processing. The slack package can be downloaded from the lyx ftp: ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.4.1/...rbs-i686-1.tgz

As for the question about fonts and that old Abiword Slack package, tell me if this helps:
