A Working Yahoo Chat Client

Hi,
Which yahoo chat client works on slackware 9.1 ?
Gaim doesn't seem to work.
I'm behind a proxy server.

Thanks a lot

yahoo messenger?

Which version of Gaim did you try? If its an older version, you might need to update to the lastest one. Kopete is pretty nice, it works with yahoo (if your a KDE user). If they still don't work, it's possible that your proxy is blocking the port that yahoo messenger uses, you'll get nowhere untill you unblock it.

Hi,
Yahoo messenger works fine in windows..that implies the port is not blocked by our firewall.
I used gyach once and it worked great in linux ...but now i can't seem to make it work.

centericq, i think the when i set it up, had a listing for yahoo.

the latest version of gyach will work, just make sure that you are using the version that pepsi wrote and not the gyach-enhanced. I have not been able to get that to work, the original gyach works fine. I use it on a daily basis.

What about Jabber?

For Gnome it's Gabber.

There's also PSI - http://psi.affinix.com/

anyone here using the official yahoo linux client, and if so, how is it for you? i installed it twice today as i was told it'd run on slack if i rpm2tgz'ed one of the RH versions, heh.

while it did install and i *was* able to use it, it seems to screw things up hardcore. logging out and trying to log back in after the install results in a nasty X crash that i'm too dumb to fix. did a complete reinstall of slack, then tried installing y again because i wasn't sure that it had caused the problem. bad idea... "startx" = crash again.

anyone had better luck? and for those of you suggesting alternatives, do you actually connect to yahoo with them and know firsthand that they connect?

Kopete

I swear by Kopete, although Gaim and Yahoo's native YMessenger are both good. As I remember, I had to install YMessenger by using RPM2TGZ. The install was not perfect. The symlinked bin files under /user/local/bin were junk. I had to delete them and RE-symlink them from /opt/ymessenger, Then, it worked great. I'm not sure about your proxy-server issues as I have never used a proxy-server. However, if you are inclined to use KDE, Kopete is pretty darn slick (at least in KDE 3.2) and handles all of the major chat interfaces. If KDE understands how to reach the internet through your proxy server, Kopete should "just work" (don't quote me, though). I have a tight family network that uses Yahoo, and I've been using Kopete for weeks now without a hitch!

hi,
I installed latest versions of gyach and gyach-enhanced ..both work great.
But they don't have plugins that gaim has. Is there any other chat client which has good number of useful plugins ?

Thanks
