A question about kernel upgrade...

I did a clean install of Slackware64 14.1 off dvd media. This came with kernel 3.10.17-x86_64.

I am running a i7-4770 processor and slackware64 8 cores or 8 penguins on boot. I setup a mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors for the slackware-current repo.

I ran a slackpkg upgrade-all, which upgraded me to 3.10.30-x86_64. My computer has EFI so I copied the new vmlinuz-huge-3.10.30 over /boot/efi/EFI/Slackware/vmlinuz. I rebooted and I saw the new kernel 3.10.30-x86_64. However, when it boots it only shows 4 cores or 4 penguins on boot.

I'm trying to figure out why this kernel would only recognize 4 cores instead of 8. It's an SMP kernel. Have any of you guys encountered this?

The i7-4770 has hyper-threading (i.e 4 cores/8 threads). Have you changed something in your bios ? There must be an option for Hyper-Threading which must be enabled to get 2 threads/core (i.e 8 penguins), otherwise, you will get only 1 thread/core (4 penguins)

Turned out when I removed the "acpi=off" boot parameter got my 8 penguins back. I guess acpi works with hyperthreading. The fan noise is back down. Thanks.
