A question about generic-kernel in /testing

hi,

I installed a generic-kernel 2.6.7 from /testing slackware 10, its a prebuild kernel. Everything looks fine when i booted with the new kernel except X refuse to starts :) giving agpgart error (however agpgart module was loaded lsmod thing shows it). I have inteli810 onboard vga.

Second no sound support (i have ac_97 built-in sound card) :) rest was looking fine with this prebuild kernel ;)

well i know some out there will suggest me to compile my own kernel, ofcourse I can do this :D.

BUT what I want to know is it possible to make my vga and sound working is this generic-kernel 2.6.7 ?

Any help in this regards will be greatly appreciated :)

Regards

It's possible :)
Just give more detailed errors (but first, search the forum for any answer, if none, come back :))

thanks for quick reply yeah thats what im doing from last one hour searching :) if someone else posted it.

Errors are very obivous 1) no screen found, check agpgart support is present in the kernel blah. 2) No sound card found, and no alsoctl restore appears during startup.

Well if there is not sound card alsactl restore shouldn't work :)
Can you post your xorg.conf file? Did u try running xorgconfig?
Do you have hotplug enabled? udev REQUIRES it

well my sound and vga is working perfectly with da default kernel 2.4.26 :)
and is it neceassry to run xorgconfig again in new kernel?
I wish someone got a solution for my problem

You have to load your agp chipset module, not only agpart.

Did you try alsaconf ? Maybe rm /etc/asound.state can help also
Did you chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug also ?

Don't be insulted if you did, but did you install the kernel-modules and alsa-driver packages that were also in the /testing/packages/linux-2.6.7/ directory? If not, that is almost certainly the problem. If you did, I have no idea what the problem is; it worked fine for me.

Thanks keefaz actaully I had chmod -x rc.hotplug for fast system bootup, after making it +x everthing working cool in 2.6.7 generic kernel
