A Pre-empt of the Slackware 15 Thread

If you hit 'last page' at the bottom you will be transported back to 2002 where kylo8787 wants to know when 8.1 is coming out.

Plus ca change.

And you didn't necro-bump it to tell him the right answer?

gus3 05-06-2018 10:50 PM

The obvious answer is, "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away."

What if, and I'm only hypothesizing, this next release turns out to be 14.3 instead?

Doubt it. The installer already says "Welcome to Slackware 15".

But IMO 14.3 is the way to go.

Edit:
But considering the recent overhaul, I understand why PV is doing it like that.

Sure. Each to his/her own. I like the 15.0 designation. :)

Ya, my only opinion about Slackware 15 would be to add Plasma 5 and give it like 6 months of real world testing in the native tree.

I don't doubt that Alien Bob has done an excellent job, I used his Plasma 5 back when he first started releasing it but I eventually settled on Cinnamon as my DE of choice.

Where it to be 15.0 (as i guesstimate will be) we will not only get the best Slackware yet, but there will be tons of news and updates to what we all grown to like.

OTOH

Where it 14.3, we would get rant's from newcomers "where is the newest this & that" but would get hands on a release as rock solid and least "my old x is now broken due to upgraded y" from the old goons.

I bet my hat that PV, our BVDFL (cheers Mr. Pat :hattip:) will pull the best of the both bags again.
;)
But yes the designation will be a message of it's own (to those in the know)

A rose by any other name number...

kingbeowulf 05-12-2018 04:56 PM

I think we should leave version numbers behind for grand superlatives, such as Slackware Stupendous or Slackware Spectacular.

A possibility for, say, 2024...
