A thread for discussing the AMD GPU drivers as they are used in Slackware.

Is that nobody has an AMD card or nobody has any problem with those ? ? ?

Nvidia is usually a shitshow where I have to download/install the proprietary binary followed with obligatory workarounds to use it when required... Whereas with AMD/ATI it usually works right out of the box and no dramas... win! |
The AMD drivers "Radeon PRO Software for Enterprise" mentioned in the OP are for specific enterprise hardware and do not cover all AMD GPUs. For most AMD GPU users on desktop computers, the Adrenaline drivers are more suitable: https://www.amd.com/en/support and https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/re...ed-linux-20-50
One of the reasons I dropped Nvidia for AMD Radeon when Slackware-Current hit kernel 5.4.x (now 5.10.x), was for the opensource amdgpu stack. No more wrestling with Nvidia. The new guy maintaining Nvidia packages for Slackbuilds.org (SBo) is doing a great job AFAIK! (I maintained Nvidia on SBo for a long time.) Thus, I find no need in most GPU applications for AMDGPU-PRO. The only bit that is missing is OpenCL. Mesa's Clover implementation works poorly, if at all. I created an amdgpu-opencl package stripping out the OpenCL bits. See https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ng-4175672690/ AMDGPU-PRO also includes vulkan libraries. So far, there hasn't been a been a need for those here. Slackware includes vulkan-sdk, and Valves' Steam client takes care of the rest. Should vulkan be needed, the open source AMDVLK is here: https://github.com/GPUOpen-Drivers/AMDVLK So far I am pleased with the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (Navi) and RX 590 (Polaris 30) with the switch to a nearly open source stack, the performance in Steam games, and some light GPU Ethereum mining. Hopefully Mesa will get OpenCL sorted so I won't even my amdgpu-opencl package: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...CL-3.0-In-Mesa Besides the closed vs. open nature of AMDGPU-PRO, AMD's blobs are built for a few specific Linux OS releases. Performance on Slackware is not guaranteed. |

i was make release this drivers for old, but now i busy in another project (core kernel). Are there enough talented people to make a unified driver? [removed] |
Your gutter language is not acceptable!

Roman Dyaba, post of this nature are not acceptable at LQ.
cwizardone, your post was not constuctive and has been edited. In the future please use the Report button and we'll address the issue directly. --jeremy |
Political correctness will be the death of Western Civilization.

This has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with ensuring LQ is a welcoming community built on mutual respect and shared understanding.

I for one welcome a spot to have all issues AMD on Slackware discussed.The AMD management hasn't made things easy for linux users over the decades but devs have been writing good stuff since about 2007.

indeed. As my post mentioned, amdgpu baked into the kernel and Mesa is spiffy, but there still is a bit more that needs doing. It is nice that AMD is not only open sourcing the code, but actively subbmitting patches.

I was have talk direct with madam d-r Lisa Su at Vladivostok central place forum. Dear madam said and I agreed that no drivers are planned for Linux in the near future, only for Windows 10, because there are enough kernel drivers. It meant that proprietary Linux drivers are not so relevant. And let place it driver in actual Linux kernel. She is a prominent scientist and businessman and understands everything perfectly and supports open source software. Any questons at https://amd.com D-r Roman Dyaba https://vk.com/7cyber |

@bassmadrigal
is community maiden, for commercial distro RED HAT and CERN Lab (Scientific Linux), also CANONICAL, brother MICROSOFT, but drivers was subscribed AMD ! All binaries-blob used from AMD Lab's and community people's. Never let make later for Windows 7, but for Windows 10 only. And only Windows. She is a prominent scientist and businessman and understands everything perfectly and supports open source software Before MICROSOFT was grab my Skype 2.04 compilation for Linux and make private it. Ho-ho-ho and it not what's all: I was name AMD driver's "Jupiter" (planet) , but now it "Juniper", VLC Player i was named "Veteran's" , now it "Veterinary" or "Vetenary". "Veteran's" for remember Second World War and other conflict's. Mean for to see historycal videos. http://www.videolan.org/ Reason: $500 for Windows 10 Pro and satellite software. But Windows now is not in actual state ! Today i was download UbuntuStudio 21.04 with 5.11 Realtime Linux kernel for testing. It have KDE 5.21.3, Firefox 87, VLC, and LibreOffice 7.1.2.2 by default. Is Perfect ! https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustu...es/21.04/beta/ My little sun was test him. I work and write now in Slackware 15.0, is best for me. Because it have SDK by default. But srong cutter. It only XDM, XFCE and Qinx theme'd. KDE is not installed. I make it from Alien's. https://slackware.nl/slackware/slackware64-current-iso/ Hey AMD, Then i can play this ONE game at my GDDR5 128-bit card ? It have Linux support by default ! https://warthunder.com https://youtu.be/oHAnK0au4LI D-r Roman Dyaba https://vk.com/7cyber AMD BE2300 2Gb ram NVIDIA GF610 1Gb https://vk.com/video267643481_456239682 |
The amdgpu-pro driver is from AMD is not a community project. It is made by AMD developers and most of it is provided as closed source binary packages. The kernel amdgpu driver is a community project, however, a good chunk of the contributions to the kernel driver are made by AMD developers.
Your information in your original post is simply not accurate. AMD makes Linux drivers and have for decades. They make a proprietary one and within the last 5-10 years, they've contributed heavily to the open source one. Users are able to use either one (although, if they aren't on one of the distros that AMD provides packages for, it definitely is not very easy to use the proprietary drivers). You also say you talked to Lisa Su at the Vladivostok forum. Lisa Su is the CEO of AMD (and has been since 2014) and she is either painfully uninformed of the drivers made by her company while trying to speak as a subject matter expert or the person you're talking to wasn't actually Lisa Su (I'm going with the latter). As for the rest of the last post, I have no idea what you're rambling on about. You talk about UbuntuStudio, Skype, Microsoft, Windows 7 & 10, VLC and then you link to an Nvidia card on a thread about AMD drivers on Slackware. Can we keep this topic about AMD drivers and Slackware? |
