Post A Couple of Questions

hello,

i have vista-slackware 13 dualboot on my asus laptop and ive encountered these issues:

1. ive tried connecting to the school wifi using slackware but for some reason i couldnt connect to the internet, i used "wlassistant" and manually setting the essid then 'dhcpcd wlan0'. i could connect to the router but cant get internet.

ive talked to the school IT guy and he couldnt figure it out too. he already put my MAC address to the list of wifi users. strange(for me) thing is when i switched to vista, i could connect to the internet.

a. is there a difference in how vista and slackware connects
to wireless?
b. what do i need to study in order to learn the process behind
connecting to the internet through wifi?

2. ive had this problem whenever i install slackware on my asus laptop. slackware works fine but i could not go to vista. i get the big red ERROR message with the line 'Could not access C:RECOVERY.dat' on top.

when i first installed slackware on this laptop(this is the second time), i had the same problem but after a few days it just went away, for no obvious reason, so i was able to access my vista partition again. but now, after installing slackware 13, i have the same problem.

ive googled the problem and they kept on suggesting that i delete the hidden recovery partition. but since the problem was "fixed" without me resorting to that the first time i encountered it im sceptical about their solution.

has anybody else using slack encountered this problem?

EDIT: sorry, i just recalled this just as i posted the thread.

on the first slackware install on this laptop, i remember seeing a message during boot that my 'vista' partition was not shutdown properly so, i wasnt able to access the ntfs partition in slackware. it also recommended that i add a line in fstab so that it would be 'forced mounted'. i did what it said and i was able to access the ntfs partition in slack. then after a few days i tried booting vista and it worked.

im not sure if it was because of the force mount. does any one have any thoughts on this?

also, will try force mounting the vista AND the recovery partition. even though i could access the partition in slackware.

PS pardon my english please.

I can only answer the first one. But have you tried wicd to connect to your wireless lan? It should be in the "extra" directory from your installation medium.

Can you ping on ip?
eq ping 212.100.160.51
Do you have the DNS servers setup correctly?

will look into using wicd on monday. thanks.

what bothers me is that i can connect to the internet through my home wireless router using slackware. it is only when i use the school wireless that i cannot connect.

no. i could not ping external ip addresses.

about configuring the DNS servers. is there a situation(the schools router configuration etc etc) that i need to change some of the DNS setup? i could connect to the net with no problem on my home wireless router and on a friends wireless.
