Only upgrade if you feel it necessary. If you only want to upgrade packages you use or services and its a minimal, just update those manually or use something like www.swaret.org to update with.
About all new versions on any distro are updated packages in most cases, nothing else.
slack 9.1 feels faster for some reason (or maybe it's just me) but i would suggest that you at least upgrade your window managers and try out some of the things in the /extra folder on cd 2
other than that, it is the same, but i upgraded also because the new kernel offers better support for some of my hardware
if u don't mind, just do a fresh install of slack 9.1 and just backup your old data, as long as u do not mind having to reconfigure
plus the new slack is much more prepared for the upcoming 2.6 kernel

Which all of this on an already configured machine to anyone needs, etc can easily be done by just updating the packages they would need, etc. No need to go thru the hassle of backing up everything, only then to go thru the whole process of installing, reconfiguring, then restoring your backed up data.. just update what you see needed for yourself for crying out loud..
