7-bit characters on console

after recently upgrading -current
any new kernel compilation (>2.6.24.x)
results in 7-bit characters on console
xterms still behave normally

booting my old 2.6.23.12 also behaves normally

i've been through the .config multiple times
and did not see anything that seemed to pertain to this

am i overlooking something silly?

The text console defaults to UTF-8 in 2.6.24 so it does not understand the old fashioned 8-bit characters. Maybe that's your problem? Add the following line to your lilo.conf to get the old default back:
Code:
  append = "vt.default_utf8=0"
/sbin/liloconfig should ask about that in slackware-current (Changelog Sat Mar 29 18:07:00 CDT 2008).
